Your tears are not wasted, they are the first drops of spring.
Heartache can feel unbearable. Grief, unending. And silence from heaven, deafening. If you've ever wondered where God is in the middle of your pain, this devotional was written for you.
Through 52 entries woven through the landscape of Psalm 23, Jesus Comforts invites you to hear the voice of the Shepherd, not to rush your healing, but to meet you in it. Every valley can become holy ground.

Does this sound familiar?
You're carrying something you were never meant to carry alone.
Grief isolates. Loss reshapes everything around it. Whether you've lost a person, a marriage, a dream, or a version of yourself, the weight feels relentless. Jesus Comforts doesn't rush past the hard places. It walks directly into them, with you.
You want comfort that goes deeper than a verse and a platitude.
You've heard the reassurances. They haven't always landed. This devotional was written from the inside of sorrow, not above it. The Voice you'll encounter here doesn't flinch — it stays, it speaks tenderly, and it tells the truth about where you are and where you're headed.
You're ready to move — but you don't know how.
Healing isn't linear, and it rarely comes with a map. Each entry in Jesus Comforts ends with a sacred invitation — a small, soul-level step that helps you move from the weight of despair toward the surprising lightness of His presence.
“You do not need to hold it together. You have permission to fall apart. I will carry the pieces and remake your heart in time.”
“Your tears have fallen into My wounds, and I have held them there, turning sorrow into sacred soil.”

The Companion Study Guide
Jesus Comforts doesn't end when you close the devotional. The companion Study Guide leads you into a yearlong journey of healing, hope, and sacred rest with Scripture, reflection questions, and prayerful prompts for each of the six sections.
When God feels silent, this section helps you reframe His stillness, not as absence, but as nearness. You'll explore what it means to truly lack nothing, and what keeps you from receiving the rest He freely offers.
Part I — The Presence That Holds You
This section moves into the sacred wound — the place where your pain becomes something God can use. You'll reflect on grief, sorrow, and how tears, when planted in trust, can bloom into unexpected joy.
Part II — The Comfort That Heals You
What are you still trying to hold together on your own? This section gently confronts the places where you're still striving, and invites you to discover the freedom that waits on the other side of letting go.
Part III — The Invitation to Surrender
Stillness is not a place, it's a posture. Through evocative questions drawn from Psalm 23, you'll learn to quiet the noise, abide in His presence, and discover that waiting on God is not weakness, but trust.
Part IV — The Gift of Stillness
Cheer is not a command, it is a gift. This section explores gratitude, forgiveness, and the surprising way joy breaks through even the hardest seasons when we stop manufacturing it and start receiving it.
Part V — The Joy That Overflows
Lean on His faithfulness, steady and sure. The final section moves you from healing received to courage lived, equipping you to carry His presence into everyday life and walk forward, unafraid.
Part VI — The Courage to Walk Forward
Why I wrote this book…
In 2012, I lost my wife and I had three young kids looking at me wondering what was going to happen next. I didn't have a plan. But I had a Shepherd. And slowly, not quickly, not without pain, He met me in that valley. This book is what I found there.
The guide who has walked this road…
After losing his wife in 2012, Jason Twombly walked the edge of sorrow with his three young children and discovered that comfort could be found in the very wound he wanted to escape. That sacred season became the foundation for everything he does now.
As an author, Second Half of Life guide, and founder of Heartsmith Coaching, Jason helps people transform pain into power, hurt into healing, and wounds into wisdom. He writes for AVAIL Magazine and leads transformational experiences through Open Heart Journey. Jesus Comforts is his debut devotional and the most personal thing he has ever written.
